HY5WS-17/50DL-TB Dropout Surge Arrester – Plug-in & Removable Type

The HY5WS-17/50DL-TB Dropout Surge Arrester is a plug-in and removable zinc oxide surge arrester designed for 10kV distribution systems. Its dropout structure makes inspection and replacement more convenient, while the thermal disconnector helps isolate a failed arrester and provides a visible indication of its operating status.

The arrester is well suited for overhead distribution lines and critical power supply locations where reliable overvoltage protection and convenient field maintenance are important. Its removable design can help reduce maintenance time while supporting continued operation of the distribution network.

Overview

The HY5WS-17/50DL-TB Plug-in and Removable Dropout Surge Arrester is designed for 10kV distribution systems and combines a zinc oxide surge arrester with a dropout mechanism. This configuration allows operators to inspect, service, or replace the arrester using an insulated operating rod, without requiring a complete power shutdown. It is particularly suitable for locations where continuous power supply is important, such as telecommunication facilities, airports, railway stations, hospitals, and commercial areas.

The arrester is also equipped with a thermal explosion-type disconnector to improve fault isolation. When the arrester experiences an abnormal condition and develops a power-frequency fault current, the disconnector operates and causes the arrester unit to drop out of the circuit. This provides a visible indication of the faulty arrester and helps prevent a damaged unit from remaining connected to the power system.

With its plug-in, removable, and dropout design, the HY5WS-17/50DL-TB simplifies field maintenance while maintaining the essential surge protection characteristics of a conventional distribution-type zinc oxide arrester. It provides a practical solution for 10kV overhead distribution networks that require both reliable overvoltage protection and convenient maintenance.

Installation and Usage Instructions

Pre-Installation Inspection

Before installation, check the connection between the zinc oxide arrester unit and the dropout mechanism. Make sure the components are securely fitted and that the mechanism can operate smoothly. Proper contact is important for reliable electrical performance.

Electrical Connection

  1. Connect the high-voltage conductor to the upper terminal of the arrester.
  2. Connect the lower terminal to the grounding system.
  3. Check all electrical and mechanical connections before energizing the equipment.
  4. Do not interchange the line and grounding connections.

Operating Precautions

The HY5WS-17/50DL-TB should be installed and operated according to the applicable requirements for 10kV distribution-type zinc oxide surge arresters. Follow the recommended safety procedures during both installation and system energization.

Maintenance and Replacement

One of the main benefits of the dropout design is convenient field maintenance. When replacement is required, technicians can use a suitable insulated operating rod to engage the arrester’s hook and remove the unit from the dropout mechanism.

This design allows the arrester to be inspected or replaced without shutting down the entire distribution line, provided that the applicable operating procedures and safety requirements are followed.

Key Advantages

  • Maintenance without planned shutdown: The removable dropout structure simplifies arrester replacement while helping maintain power continuity.
  • Visible fault indication: When the arrester operates abnormally, the dropout mechanism provides a clear visual indication of the affected unit.
  • Convenient field replacement: The plug-in structure allows technicians to remove and install the arrester using an insulated operating rod.
  • Rapid fault isolation: The thermal explosion-type disconnector helps separate a failed arrester from the power system.
  • Reliable distribution-line protection: Combines zinc oxide surge protection with a practical dropout mechanism for 10kV overhead distribution networks.

Recommended Applications

The HY5WS-17/50DL-TB is particularly suitable for facilities where power continuity and convenient maintenance are important, including:

  • Telecommunication facilities
  • Airports and railway stations
  • Hospitals and healthcare facilities
  • Commercial districts and public infrastructure
  • Industrial and utility distribution networks
  • Other 10kV distribution systems requiring accessible arrester maintenance
